My Expertise

Psychiatric Diagnosis

My approach is to treat diseases, not symptoms, and the approach to diagnosis needs to go beyond DSM where that approach is not shown to be valid.

Psychopharmacology

All drugs are either symptomatic or disease-modifying. Symptomatic drugs are helpful short-term but not long-term, and vice versa for disease-modifying drugs. Listen to my podcast where I explain this approach.

Consultation

I can provide a game plan to change your treatment plan, which your clinician can implement, with my ongoing consultation. See examples of my approach in “Curbside Consults” on my clinical website.

My Background

 Clinical Training and Academic Positions

I have been practicing clinical psychiatry for about 30 years.  I have worked in an academic setting most of that time, also doing research and teaching.  I trained at Harvard Medical School in the McLean Hospital residency program (1991-1994) and also completed an internship in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (1990) as well as a research fellowship in mood disorders at MGH (1994-95). I then worked as an assistant professor of psychiatry at my medical alma mater, Virginia Commonwealth University and later at Georgetown and George Washington Universities. I returned to Harvard as an assistant professor at MGH and Cambridge Hospitals, then worked as an associate professor at Emory University, and then since 2008 have been a full professor of psychiatry at Tufts University, as well as a lecturer on psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

I have been featured on CNN, MSNBC, and other major media.  Among my books, A First-Rate Madness was a national bestseller and was reviewed in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, and elsewhere.
